Director's Note Last month, I walked into our open mic (after dashing out to put our then 4-month-old back to sleep!) and saw, along with a number of our regulars, about 20 or 30 teens I'd never seen before! I was thrilled and, I have to admit, a little trepidatious. How would this go?
Well, it was amazing. The teens that were playing were talented and brave. Those that were watching were respectful and supportive. In fact, one of our regulars (an adult) got up there and announced, "Hey, I'm nervous," and one of the kids responded, "Don't be! You're awesome."
The solidarity of the group was great. Across generations, genders, backgrounds and musical styles, and more. We all had a great time.
Afterwards, one woman who was in the audience came up to me and said, "You've restored my faith. It's amazing what you've done here."
I thanked her, but in retrospect, what I should have said is this: "We gave them the space, but they did all the rest."

The Class Every New (or not so new) Parent Needs
"Colleen explains -- in the most reasonable and logical way -- why so many 'must-have' products are not only unnecessary but can actually hinder your child's development. Her advice is simple and easy to implement, and always mindful of the demands of modern parenting. She's amazing."
- client/local mom Stephanie Hinkaty
Licensed physical therapist, Colleen Pecylak, was working with a young client - a little boy - and his mother a couple of years ago when she had the light bulb moment that led to the creation of our newest course offering at The Purple Crayon, Babymoves. "The mom and I were friendly, and she was pregnant with her second child so every time we met I would remind her, 'You're going to do tummy time with this next one, right?'" Colleen recalls. "One day she said back seriously, 'Absolutely. I learned my lesson.'" The mom's response really struck a chord with Colleen, who felt a parent shouldn't have to go through helping a child with developmental issues in order to 'learn a lesson': "Somebody should be telling you this beforehand."
Babymoves is a 3-week informational and interactive session for expectant parents and parents with infants up to 6 months to learn from Colleen Pecylak's wealth of experience. She has been a licensed physical therapist working in pediatrics for 19 years and, in addition to her one-on-one Early Intervention jobs, she has worked in local school districts and at facilities such as Blythedale Children's Hospital and the Westchester Center for Educational and Emotional Development, where she was the Head of Physical Therapy. In her work, she has started to see many children's developmental milestones happening later, in response to changes in the way we parent, from important medical recommendations (putting babies to sleep on their backs) to the not-so-necessary products we all have (excersaucers, walkers, swings..). "I always say that what has made our lives convenient has made babies' lives too convenient."
But sorting through all the recommendations and advice can add up to a job many new parents don't have the experience or time to do on their own. At Babymoves, topics will include:
"Tummy Time": when you should start, why it's important, what to do if your baby doesn't like it.
Movement milestones: what your baby should be doing at different stages and how to encourage them to move.
Products and toys: which ones are harmful, which are OK, and WHY.
"The why of all this," Colleen says, "is my favorite part." She explains that she has seen over and over again with her clients that if parents understand why they should - and shouldn't - do certain things with their infants, then they are much more likely to follow through with these instructions, and more likely to be creatively engaged with their child's development.
So bring your questions - and your babies! - to Babymoves
Sundays, April 15th, 22nd, and 29th, 10:30 am
FIRST-TIME DISCOUNTED RATE: $90 for 3 sessions
Register here!
AND, if you have an older-than-6-months baby and would be interested in a Babymoves class specifically for your little one's age group, or if you can't make all the dates above, please let us know!

Can Lunchpad Help Launch You?
"As a former professional, current mom, and new business owner, I've often felt the need for a casual gathering to have purposeful discussions. The concept of brainstorming and networking can be daunting and vague, but not within the Lunchpad, where similarly-minded women are coming together once a week to share ideas, offer skills, and help move thoughts and concepts forward. It's just what I needed." -Nola Kende Long, Project Organize

Feb.18th: Ruth Moody On Stage Live!
If you missed Dar Williams back in October, you do not want to miss this show!
Best known as one-third of the award-laden Canadian folk trio, The Wailin' Jennys, Ruth Moody comes from an intensely musical upbringing, with strong roots in traditional folk and Celtic music. A triple-threat, Ruth is celebrated for her remarkable multi-instrumentalism (she plays guitar, banjo, accordion, piano and bodhrán), her exceptional songwriting talent (her song One Voice led her to the 2005 International Songwriting Competition semi-finals and has been featured on Putamayo's Women of the World, Acoustic, and covered by countless other artists), and, perhaps most of all, for her exquisite voice (Michael Bialas at The Huffington Post said: "Her seductive soprano is pure joy, an irresistible force of nature." Hear it yourself in the video below).
Ruth exemplifies the bravery and self-directed pathfinding that we hold dear--in our hearts AND in our mission statement! As a founding member of the Jennys, she has pursued a successful career without sacrificing her creative integrity. And now, with the Jennys on a temporary break to explore individual passions, she has launched a solo album and tour that must sink or swim on her individual merits, and done so with style. "When you're doing it on your own," she has said of this transition, "it's kind of freeing because you don't have to worry about what anyone else thinks. And you can make crazy decisions if you want, or you can try new things."
Don't miss this chance to experience Ruth Moody live, in the intimate setting and rich acoustics of our venue. Fans of Dar Williams who came to her show last fall said they'd never heard her sound better than at The Purple Crayon, and we know that Ruth is going to sound similarly incredible on our stage. And stick around for drinks and a few surprises after the show. You can even make it a belated-Valentine's Day date night!...
